I came here to lend my support to you today to offer my solidarity for this unprecedented display of democracy and popular will.

저는 이 전례없는 민주주의와 대중의 의지의 표출에 대한 연대를 표하고 도움을 드리기 위해 오늘 이곳에 왔습니다.

 

The people have asked, so what are the demands? What are the demands all of these people are making?

사람들을 묻곤 합니다, 그래서 뭘 요구하는 건데? 이 사람들이 요구하는 것들이 뭐야? 

 

Either they say there are no demands and that leaves your critics confused, 

아니면 그들은 (정해진) 요구사항이 없다고 말하곤 여러분의 비판을 혼란스럽게 합니다.

 

Or they say that the demands for social equality and economic justice are impossible demands.

혹은, 그들은 사회적 평등과 경제적 정의에 대한 이 요구가 불가능한 요구라고 말합니다.

 

And the impossible demands, they say, are just not practical.

그리고 불가능한 요구는 비현실적일 뿐이라고, 그들은 말합니다.

 

If hope is an impossible demand, 

만약 희망이 불가능한 요구라면, 

 

Then we demand the impossible.

우리는 불가능한 것을 요구합니다.

 

― that the right to shelter, food and employment are impossible demands, 

— 주거·양식·고용에 대한 권리가 불가능한 요구라면,

 

Then we demand the impossible. 

우리는 불가능한 것을 요구합니다.

 

If it is impossible to demand that those who profit from the recession,

이 불황으로부터 이윤을 얻는 이들에게, 

 

redistribute their wealth and cease their greed, 

그들의 부를 재분배하고 탐욕을 멈출 것을 요구하는 것이 불가능하다면,

 

Then yes, we demand the impossible. 

그렇습니다, 우리는 불가능한 것을 요구합니다

 

But it is true there are no demands that you can submit to arbitration here,

Because we’re not just demanding economic justice and social equality. 

우리가 요구하고 있는 것은 단지 경제적 정의와 사회적 평등뿐만이 아니기 때문입니다.

 

We are assembling in public,

We are coming together as bodies in alliance

우리는 몸들의 연합으로써 함께 나왔습니다.

 

In the street and in the square, 

거리로 그리고 광장으로,

 

We’re standing here together making democracy

우리는 민주주의를 만들어가며 이곳에 함께 서있습니다.

 

Enacting the phrase, “We the People.” 

“우리가 사람이다”라는 경구를 시연하면서 말입니다.
